Dr. Lois Calder, OD
Dr. Lois Calder graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry in 1980. Following a two-year teaching experience at the University of Benin, Nigeria, West Africa, she returned to Canada and joined the team at what was then a unique new facility, now the Vision Institute of Canada. Her interest centers on the eye care needs of seniors. She is the Director of Low Vision Services, assisting the growing population of those with partial sight. She also directs the Community Outreach Programs, providing mobile primary eye care services to several long-term care facilities and shelters. Her interest extends internationally, including regular participation on volunteer eye care projects in the developing world.
Dr. Leah Markin, OD
Dr. Leah Markin joined the clinical staff of the Vision Institute in 2016 and is our Director of Pediatric Services. She earned her Doctor of Optometry Degree from the State University of New York College of Optometry, graduating with honours. Dr. Markin’s clinical training provided extensive experience in pediatrics, binocular vision and vision therapy, as well as ocular disease treatment and management, in addition to primary care. During the course of her studies Dr. Markin was involved in peer tutoring, through her involvement in the Beta Sigma Kappa - International Optometric Honor Society. She also participated in vision screenings for children at inner-city schools in New York City.
Dr. Janice Hui, OD, FAAO
Dr. Janice Hui joined the clinical staff of the Vision Institute in February 2019 and provides pediatric vision care services. She has extensive clinical experience in pediatrics, binocular vision, vision therapy and neuro-optometric rehabilitation. She graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 2013 with an honors specialization in Medical Sciences and then went on to receive a Doctorate in Optometry Degree from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science in 2017. She completed a Residency in Pediatrics and Primary Care at Nova Southeastern University in 2018. Dr. Hui is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and has received numerous academic awards of excellence.
Dr. Jenna L. Walden, OD
Dr. Jenna Walden joined the clinical staff of the Vision Institute in March 2019 and brings her extensive experience in general and specialty eye care, including the diagnosis, treatment, and management of ocular diseases to our patients. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biomedical Science from the University of Waterloo in 2007, and then graduated from the New England College of Optometry in Boston in 2011 with a Doctorate in Optometry. She is an exceptional communicator who is adept in the diagnosis and management of pediatric disorders such as binocular vision disorders, and refractive error.
Dr. Alan Ng, MSc, OD, FAAO
Dr. Alan Ng joined the clinical staff of the Vision Institute in February 2019 as our Director of Contact Lens Services and provides corneal and contact lens treatment services as well as primary care. Dr. Ng received a Bachelor of Medical Sciences Degree from the University of Western Ontario in 2010, a Master of Science Degree in 2012 and his Doctor of Optometry Degree in 2016 from the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry & Vision Science. In 2017 he completed a Residency in Cornea and Contact Lenses at the University of Waterloo and became a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry in 2017. Dr. Ng has received numerous teaching and research awards and we are very pleased to have him as part of our clinical team
Dr. Paul Chris, OD
Dr. Paul Chris, of Toronto, was appointed as the Executive Director of the Institute following the retirement in December 2004 of Dr. Mitchell Samek. Dr. Chris, who served as treasurer of the Vision Institute during 2004, practiced optometry in Toronto after graduating from the University of Waterloo in 1976 and retired from clinical practice in 2016. Dr Chris also served for ten years on the Council of the College of Optometrists of Ontario (COO), and was President of the College from 2001 - 2003. Dr. Chris has a special interest in Indigenous vision health issues and the role of nutrition in ocular health.
Optometry Interns from many different optometry schools throughout Canada and the United States assist our doctors in examining patients in the clinic. They bring with them the most up-to-date knowledge and skills regarding eye care.
