Low Vision Examinations And Therapy

A low vision consultation is beneficial when vision with standard eyeglasses is inadequate for daily tasks. Patients are referred to this area of our clinic by other eye care providers or by other agencies such as the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. Individuals also may visit our low vision service without referral, by calling the Vision Institute directly.

A low vision aid may be used in conjunction with standard eyeglasses or contact lenses to provide extra magnification for specific tasks. Many designs of magnifiers are available for reading or hobbies. Telescopes may be used to view objects at far distances. Specialized eyeglasses with tinted lenses are designed in some situations. Specific task lighting might also be recommended. For those with severe visual impairments, closed circuit televisions offer larger magnification of print for easier reading.

Low vision consultations are performed by Dr. Lois Calder on Wednesdays.
